Naturopathy is a system of healthcare that aims to help the body to heal itself by drawing on treatment methods from several traditional systems of medicine. Here at Avena we use herbal medicine, homeopathic medicines, nutritional supplements, dietary and lifestyle changes as well as a range of stress management techniques.
Naturopathy seeks to promote the natural healing powers of the body to cure itself. It focuses on treating the cause of a disease rather than the symptoms themselves.
What is naturopathy?
Good health and wellness is what naturopathic treatment is all about. The main emphasis of naturopathic practice is the belief that the body has an inbuilt ability to strive for health. Naturopathy is rooted in the belief that health is more than just the absence of disease and works on strengthening the body's natural defences.
Avena's naturopaths will look at you from a holistic perspective, looking to find and eliminate the underlying causes of your illness, rather than eliminating the symptoms.
What can I expect from a naturopathic consultation at Avena?
Your initial consultation will take between 1 and 1 1/2 hours. You will be asked questions relating to current problems and past medical history as well as diet, sleep, lifestyle, and emotional aspects of your health. A personalised treatment plan will then be tailored to your individual needs.
We are sensitive to the difficulties encountered by many people when working with a naturopath and so every effort is made to keep dietary restrictions and costly supplementation to a minimum.
On going support is offered through follow up consultations as well as phone calls and email in between consultations when required.
Please bring any medical tests relating to your current problems as well as details of any medications or nutritional supplements you are currently taking.
Why should I see a naturopath about taking herbs or supplements?
Avena's naturopaths have had extensive training in herbal medicine and nutritional therapies and they are required to keep up with the latest findings in herb/drug/nutrient interactions. They are knowledgeable about potentially harmful interactions and can help you assess the right herbs or supplements and the right dosage for your condition. The label of "natural" is no guarantee that a supplement or remedy is completely safe for you to take.
It is especially important to receive comprehensive assessment and on going support from a naturopath if you have a significant health condition or if you are taking any medications. Some of the conditions our naturopaths may be able to help you with include:
